After succumbing to a fever of some sort in 1705, Irish woman Margorie McCall was hastily buried to prevent the spread of whatever had done her in. Margorie was buried with a valuable ring, which her husband had been unable to remove due to swelling. This made her an even better target for body snatchers, who could cash in on both the corpse and the ring.

The evening after Margorie was buried, before the soil had even settled, the grave-robbers showed up and started digging. Unable to pry the ring off the finger, they decided to cut the finger off. As soon as blood was drawn, Margorie awoke from her coma, sat straight up and screamed.

The fate of the grave-robbers remains unknown. One story says the men dropped dead on the spot, while another claims they fled and never returned to their chosen profession.

Margorie climbed out of the hole and made her way back to her home.

Her husband John, a doctor, was at home with the children when he heard a knock at the door. He told the children, “If your mother were still alive, I’d swear that was her knock.”

When he opened the door to find his wife standing there, dressed in her burial clothes, blood dripping from her finger but very much alive, he dropped dead to the floor. He was buried in the plot Margorie had vacated.

Margorie went on to re-marry and have several children. When she did finally die, she was returned to Shankill Cemetery in Lurgan, Ireland, where her gravestone still stands. It bears the inscription “Lived Once, Buried Twice.”

i feel like people just use the word as shorthand for that idea instead of actually thinking about what empowerment is and how it can be different for different people

I have a hard time wondering how anyone can justify the Xbox One. It would be one thing is some one was saying “I know it sucks but I’ve always had an xbox and I want to play the games coming out on it.” I can understand how a person can devote a lot of time and energy into their hobby and they feel like they want to stick to their console no matter what, thick and thin. I can respect that they have enough intelligence to see how the Xbox One is problematic for consumers and gamers but still want to buy one. It is your money after all.

But someone who tries to say the policies are not that bad and that everyone is being a cry baby (which is not a valid argument btw) is a person I don’t understand.

It’s like the Star Wars prequels. It’s so obvious that George Lucas doesn’t understand even in the slightest what the original Star War’s trilogy meant to so many people. I might even go so far as to say it’s pretty obvious that he hates everything about Star Wars other than it’s unfailing ability to make him money.

I would say the same about Xbox One and consumers. Microsoft has made it very clear with both it’s new policies and statements made by Microsoft employees that it doesn’t care about you or gamers or consumer retention. They value the people who play their games and consoles for nothing more than the money they make them. I understand how business works, and obviously everything is done to make money but there is more to business than just dollar signs and the bottom line.

Take Starbucks as an example. Amazing business that makes billions every year. Part of the reason Starbucks is so successful, and so many other industries model their strategies around Starbucks, is the emphasis on the consumer. It’s not enough to just offer a product people want. As a business you must be inviting, friendly and willing to listen and change. That is what kept a business that sells 5$ cups of coffee open and even thriving in an economy where logically they should have been anything but. The focus on customer retention and the idea that people will come back for more than a product when you at least seem like you care about them is so lacking in Microsoft’s business strategy it’s hard to watch.

Do they even relies how much money they are going to lose? I’m speaking from a consumer stand point only. I had someone mention that Microsoft is trying to be more developer friendly and that they may end up making money off that approach in the long run. I honestly have little to no knowledge about how those relationships work so he very well may be right. Still excusing anti-customer behavior by saying “they are just doing it to make money off someone else” doesn’t really bake my beans you feel me?
